Birmingham 2009 GCSE results: School by school figures

PUPILS in Birmingham are improving virtually across the board, according to the city’s latest results tables.

Kings Norton Boys pupil, Alex Lubin has acheived 11 A*'s and one A in his GCSE's.

There have been significant improvements in pupils’ results, most noticeably among early years reception children and at GCSE.

It prompted Coun Les Lawrence, the city’s Cabinet member for children, young people and families to say that Birmingham was gaining recognition as an “education powerhouse”.

But he was concerned at whether national budgets would allow the success to continue.

He said that school funding was “very ring-fenced” for the next financial year, but they had no knowledge of what would come after that.

Birmingham’s GCSE results led the success story, with the proportion of pupils achieving at least five A*-C passes rising from last year’s 66.4 per cent to 72.4 per cent – well above the provisional national average of 70 per cent.

The figure also improves when English and maths are included, rising from 45.4 per cent to 47.5 per cent, closing the gap with the national average to little more than two per cent.

The number of secondary schools at risk of Government intervention – those with less than 30 per cent including maths and English – has halved from 20 last year to just ten.

One of the schools to improve is Harborne Hill, which has taken its five A*-Cs including English and maths from 15 per cent to 34 per cent.

Head teacher Andy Wright said: “I am delighted we have gone through the final threshold and proud of what we have achieved.”

At Key Stage 1, the number of seven-year-old pupils achieving level 2 or above in both reading and writing increased by two percentage points to 80 per cent and 76 per cent respectively.

At reception age, Birmingham achieved seven of 11 new targets based around personal, social and emotional development and communication, language and literacy.
