GCSE league tables: Birmingham schools are some of best in country

TOP GCSE results have meant a city school has kept its record of being the most improved in the UK ever.

Perry Beeches School, in Perry Barr, scored 100 per cent of A* to C grades including maths and English.

The result compared with a national average of 53.1 per cent.

Head teacher Liam Nolan said that just three years ago only 30 per cent of pupils got five A* to C grades and 21 per cent with English and maths.

He said: “This isn’t some school in the south, in Surrey, or some nice suburb, this is our city. We are an inner-city comprehensive school and we’re delighted about that.

“This is about a community that works together. It’s about parents and staff doing their very best for amazing young people.”

The school was threatened with closure and given notice to improve in September 2007 – five months after Mr Nolan arrived.

He said: “Some of the first things I did were raise staff morale and reward excellence from students.

“We celebrated everything that was successful in the school to give people the boost, to give people the belief that they could be outstanding. And my goodness they have proved it.”

Birmingham’s top comprehensive at A-Level was Plantsbrook School, in Sutton Coldfield. Its sixth-form reached 903 average points per student, compared with the national amount of 732.9.

Head teacher Tracy Campbell said she was proud of the results.

She said: “It’s great news. Ultimately it’s about the choices that they enable the young people to make.
