Tories strengthen their grip

JUBILANT Tories strengthened their grip on Birmingham as Prime Minister Gordon Brown took "a kicking" in the local elections.

In a grim night for Labour in the city, Tory candidates took council seats from Labour in Erdington, Weoley, Longbridge, Oscott, Quinton and Stockland Green, a Labour stronghold for more than 20 years.

Tory council leader Mike Whitby was delighted, saying the nation was seeing “the resurgence of a very modern urban Conservative party.”

Khalid Mahmood, Labour MP for Perry Barr, admitted his party’s performance was poor and said: “It’s a kicking and we need to get off our backsides and do some work."

Nationally, it appeared that the Tories had around a 44 per cent of share of the vote, with Labour heading for its worst result in 30 years.
