One stranded but 'accounted for'

One man remains stranded but accounted for after he was caught up in treacherous weather during a fell race, the RAF said.

Police and mountain rescue volunteers worked with two RAF helicopters in the Snowdonia range in North Wales to recover athletes from the Welsh 1000m Peaks Race, which was abandoned due to heavy wind and rain.

Around 245 people started the race and a number had to be airlifted to safety by helicopter.

An RAF spokesman said: "Everybody has been accounted for."

Originally, two people were lost under cloud but police were talking to them on mobile telephones.

The weather was too bad to send a helicopter so mountain rescue personnel managed to bring one of the men off the hill.
