Environment minister Kennedy quits

Environment minister Jane Kennedy has quit the Government as the second round of Gordon Brown's reshuffle got under way.

Ms Kennedy, the MP for Liverpool Wavertree, reportedly resigned after refusing to pledge her loyalty to Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Meanwhile there were reports that twin MPs Angela and Maria Eagle have been promoted in the shake-up of junior ministerial posts following Friday's Cabinet reshuffle.

A Number 10 political source told PA: "Jane Kennedy has decided to stand down and resign, which happens in reshuffles."

Ms Kennedy was not offered a job, but made it clear she wanted to leave the Government, he said.
