Tories list expenses pay-back MPs

The Tory party is publishing a list of MPs who have agreed to pay back more than £100,000 in expenses to the House of Commons authorities.

The move comes as a result of the work of the Conservatives' own scrutiny committee, which examined all Tory claims.

Leader David Cameron addressed his MPs to explain the process and reassure them there was no element of a "witch hunt" - but he stressed the expenses system was "deeply flawed", said party sources.

Sources said they were not expecting any Conservative MPs to have to stand down as a result "at this stage".

The sources said: "It will be a list of MPs who have agreed to pay back money in the wake of the expenses story."

Mr Cameron explained to the MPs how the internal scrutiny panel trawled through the claims.

"His tone was one that he fully understands MPs have been through a difficult time and wants to help them where possible - but equally we have to recognise that the expenses system is deeply flawed and that steps needed to be taken and this is the first stage," said the party sources.

"This is totally not a witch hunt, there is no element of a witch hunt."

Mr Cameron is understood to have stressed the party's need for total transparency to try to rebuild public trust in the system.
