M42 initiative hailed

DRIVERS today welcomed plans to roll out hard shoulder driving to other motorways after a successful trial on the M42 near Birmingham.

The six-year, £6 billion jambuster package will open up the lane on the M3 and M4 approaches to London, the M4 and M5 around Bristol and the M3 and M27 around Southampton.

Nigel Humphries, from the Association of British Drivers, said the 50mph speed limit put on the other three lanes when the hard shoulder’s in use should be scrapped.

Instead drivers using the emergency lane should be restricted to 30mph.

“The paraphernalia that goes with the scheme on the M42 is overkill,” he said.

“The lane use is absolutely ridiculous. The traffic’s still trundling along and if somebody stops it’s dangerous.

“It would make it a lot simpler if they said use the hard shoulder to leave at the next exit but don’t go over 30mph.”
