Drug smuggler caught at Birmingham Airport is jailed

Daniel Hughes

A SMUGGLER who tried to bring 26 kilos of cannabis through Birmingham airport has been jailed for 32 months.

Daniel Francis Hughes, of dual British/South African nationality, was arrested by officers from the UK Border Agency when they found the drugs hidden in his luggage.

The 49-year-old from Cape Town pleaded guilty to attempting to smuggle the drugs worth £70,000 into the country and was jailed at Warwick Crown Court on Thursday.

His Honour Judge Coates said: “You walked into this with your eyes wide open and did it for greed. You knew if you were caught you would be facing a custodial sentence.”

John Theobald, senior investigating officer for HM Revenue & Customs, said: “We aim to protect society from drug smuggling and hope this sends out a clear message that our approach is one of zero tolerance.”
