Balsall Common GP accused of assaulting son
Magistrates said if they breached these conditions, which includes only allowing the doctor to enter Balsall Common if he needs to see his solicitor by advanced appointment, they could be re-arrested and brought back to court.
Alijah and Malik spoke only to confirm their name and details during a brief five-minute hearing before proceedings were adjourned.
Malik has also denied a further separate charge of assault on a baby.
Bosses of NHS Coventry, who Alijah worked for, yesterday confirmed that a hearing panel decided to suspend the GP this week from working for them pending the outcome of the court case.
Suman Ghaiwal, spokeswoman for NHS Coventry Primary Care Trust (PCT) said: “The PCT is aware of the charges against Dr Syed Alijah.
“GPs are required to inform the PCT of any issues which may affect their inclusion in the performers list.
“An oral hearing panel was held this week and the decision was taken to suspend Dr Alijah from practice.
“Suspension is a neutral act and is intended to protect all parties involved, pending the outcome of the charges.
“The PCT has taken steps to ensure continuity of care for patients registered at the practice.
“General practitioners are not directly employed by the PCT. They are independent businesses which the PCT enters into contracts with to provide services for the local population.
“Suspension from the GP register is an issue for the General Medical Council.
“A practitioner would be taken off the PCT’s performers list if they are convicted of an offence and sentenced to imprisonment for over six months.
“Any patients with any concerns can speak to practice staff.”
The General Medical Council is expected to keep a close eye on proceedings and could hold its own inquiry by a disciplinary panel as a result.
Alijah qualified in 1967 from Lucknow University, in India, and has become a well known medic in Coventry after years of service.
West Midlands Police said officers were alerted to an assault in Huddesford Drive, Balsall Common, in April and later charged a 68-year-old man.
