Solihull patient of controversial breast cancer surgeon tells of ordeal

A BREAST cancer victim has spoken of her ordeal as more cases emerge against a controversial Midland surgeon.

Top surgeon Ian Paterson is under investigation for his ‘cleavage sparing’ mastectomy techniques at Solihull Hospital.

Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust has contacted around 500 women and is trying to reach another 70 who were operated on.

Mum-of-one Sharon Hollins, aged 40 and from Solihull, said a recall four years after the operation had left her future on a knife edge.

“I feel like I have been tipped over the edge,” said Mrs Hollins, a florist at the Handful of Flowers in Marston Green.

“Before this bombshell, I was at the best time in my life. I was through the mastectomy, had a breast reconstruction and felt I had got through the cancer diagnosis from 2007.

“But now my future is uncertain and doctors say I am at risk of cancer returning.

“I’m shocked, angry and upset.”

The Birmingham Mail revealed last year that a review was under way on Mr Paterson’s controversial mastectomies.

It involved him leaving a small amount of breast tissue around the cleavage for cosmetic reasons.
