Barcelona is the second biggest city in Spain and is a great destination for a weekend break. Of course, there is so much to see and do there, that people often stay for a longer holiday.
Deals on flights to Barcelona are often very good and some agents include hotels in the deal, so it is worth searching the Internet and travel agents’ deals too.
The no-frills airlines often give the best deals but can sometimes have hidden costs, so be sure to look at all airlines before booking. Flight times are about two hours, and the main airport in Barcelona is called El Prat, which is about 25 minutes' drive from the city.
You can also get the Renfe train or the aerobus from the airport, which will take you to the city centre.
Barcelona is a busy place all year round, with summer the busiest time. However, many of the locals leave for their holidays in August, leaving the city mainly filled with tourists. If you are flexible on dates, it is best to go outside of school holidays when there are fewer crowds and you are more likely to get a good deal on flights.
Barcelona is a big city so you will probably need to use public transport to get around. This consists of the metro, buses and taxis. You can also hire mopeds for your stay. This is a popular way to travel for both locals and tourists.
There is also a Bus Turistic, which runs during the summer months and stops at all the major tourist attractions.
Barcelona is famed for its architecture and culture. The Gothic quarter is a great place to visit for the architecture and has fantastic views of the city. Las Ramblas, a tree-lined street, is one of the best places in which to visit markets and relax in cafes while watching the many street artists that perform there.
Picasso and Gaudi are the two most famous artists originating from Barcelona, and there are many museums and galleries celebrating their works.
There is so much to see, but a couple of the highlights are the Sagrada Familia and the Parc Guell. Be sure to arrive at the main tourist attractions early to try to avoid the queues as the city is such a popular place to visit.
A special attraction of the city is the beaches, which offer a different landscape without having to travel far. Barceloneta is the closest beach but this gets busy, especially in the summer months, so it is good to go a bit further out - to Nova Icaria beach, for instance.
Barcelona also has one of the most famous football clubs in the world, and if there is a game playing at home, the city will be very busy with a great atmosphere. The nightlife is also well renowned and normally gets going after about ten o’clock.
Barcelona is a great city and has something to offer everyone, from couples to families.
