As the weather turns colder, we want our homes to be warm, cosy and inviting, so autumn is a great time of year to think about the decor of your house. Autumn/Winter 2011 has a number of new interior design trends to think about, and here are some of the best colour schemes for the upcoming season.
As we finally pull ourselves out of the recession, the icy blues, pale greys and pastel greens fade into the background and in their place we will see plenty of warm, vibrant colours which are very much reflective of the new economic enthusiasm. Expect to see plenty of comforting colours such as sunny yellows and deep golds, which are set to really lift the mood, as the minimalist look takes a back seat.
Blues and greens are still prevalent; however the pasty, misty colours of spring are overshadowed by powerful jewel colours, which are set to add some sparkle to our homes. Try vivid emerald green, rich ruby red, deep sapphire blues or rich royal purple to add accents to your home. Be careful not to opt for anything too dark, otherwise you’ll ruin the upbeat trend that interior designers have been careful to deploy.
Complement your rich colours with paler, prettier colours to help lift the room and give the feeling of space and softness. Rich creams, buttery yellows and the lightest of greys will all be prevalent this coming season. Designers were also showcasing hints of lush soft pinks, lavenders and blue-whites.
Colour blocking was a major fashion trend for Spring/Summer 2011 and this is definitely something that the braver interior designers have taken into account. If you want something bold, brave and maybe even a little brassy then opt for some clashing combinations to really give your rooms a new lease of life and show some personality.
This might sound a little over the top, but it’s a real move away from the cold, minimalist look that we’ve seen dominating the scene in past seasons. Clash your pillar box reds with fuchsia or an elegant grey-purple to really nail this trend. Warmer colours are again the key to this trend, so mix and match oranges, pinks, reds and yellows for maximum effect. Use accessories to help accent your colour blocking, but be sure to keep furniture neutral, or you risk losing the effect to a messy look.
If solid colours aren’t for you then you might be interested in the patterned trends that are emerging ready for autumn. Warmer colours will melt into soft, autumnal florals, which are incorporated into draped curtains, throws and plump pillows. They’ll be seen again in vintage style wool plaids and checks as interior designers look to the British royals for inspiration.
Everything British is most definitely back in vogue, thanks to Will and Kate, but avoid stereotypical prints of London buses and phone boxes and instead opt for warm, pretty patchwork accessories to liven up a room. Anything knitted, crocheted or patchwork is a very big trend for interior accessories for Autumn/Winter and it also helps add to the depth and warmth of a room, so consider adding these to help accent your chosen colours.
