Makeover is centre stage

COUNCIL chiefs have revealed plans to revamp part of Lichfield to create an eye-catching focal point for visitors.

The space in front of the Lichfield Garrick Theatre is set to get a radical makeover as part of a project to create a new Garrick Square.

Lichfield District Council is now urging residents to give their thoughts on the proposals during a consultation exercise.

Work will be carried out to improve the entrance to the Lichfield Garrick and the Three Spires Shopping Centre.

Further improvements will also be made to areas in Wade Street, Castle Dyke and Frog Lane.

The project will be completed in two phases. Phase one, which includes the area in front of the main entrance to the Garrick on Wade Street, will take place this summer.

Phase two, which includes areas of Castle Dyke and Frog Lane, will be linked to the £90 million Friarsgate shopping and leisure development, starting in 2009.

Coun Neil Roberts, cabinet member for development services, said: "This is an exciting project that will give this area a great focal point.

"The designs include new paving, outdoor seating and smart street furniture, which should really boost the area."

The Garrick Square consultation is running from now until March 3.

Large scale plans of the proposals are on display in Lichfield District Venture's office in Donegal House on Bore Street.
