School's on the up - inspectors

A SCHOOL has been praised by Government inspectors for making much needed improvements.

Although it was only given a satisfactory rating, an Ofsted report said Chase Terrace Primary, in Rugeley Road, Chase Terrace, Burntwood, was a fast improving school.

A previous inspection in 2003 highlighted problems that needed to be addressed such as the achievement of pupils, particularly in mathematics, and staffing difficulties.

But the latest report, following a two day visit by inspectors in January, stated that the school was heading in the right direction and praised headteacher Mary Hinds for leading the recovery.

The report said: "This is a satisfactory and fast improving school.

"Achievement, which has been unsatisfactory for several years, is now satisfactory and improving rapidly, and standards are broadly average."

Provision in the Foundation Stage was also rated good, and staff work closely together.

But the report did also highlight some issues that needed to be addressed, particularly writing skills, standards in Science and increasing the IT opportunities for youngsters.
