Building work starts on new unit at St Giles' Hospice

Work starts on the new unit at St Giles' Hospice at Whittington, near Lichfield.

WORK to build a multi-million-pound unit at a hospice is due to start on Monday.

Construction firm SpellerMetcalfe will start building the £8.5 million inpatient unit at St Giles Hospice, Whittington, near Lichfield.

The 27-bed facility will replace an existing 18-bed unit and feature en-suite accommodation in 17 larger single rooms and three multi-occupation wards for those who prefer the company of other patients.

It will also provide overnight accommodation for relatives.

Funding for the project has been made possible through St Giles’ Capital Appeal.

Around £6.1million has already been secured from designated reserves, grant-making trusts, gifts and pledges, including a grant of £500,000 from the Department of Health. Money has also been raised through a number of appeal-specific events.

St Giles Hospice spokeswoman, Laura Pennycuick, said: “We’re immensely grateful for the support we’ve received from the community to enable us to reach this stage.

“But we still require another £2.4million to enable us to successfully complete the project, and we’d urge anyone who can help to get in touch.

“SpellerMetcalfe has constructed four hospice buildings across the Midlands.

“The work has been carefully planned to ensure all those who rely on the hospice’s services can continue to benefit from our care throughout the building process.”

Anyone requiring information about the appeal can call Ms Pennycuick on 0121 378 6295.
