Crash kills driver on M6 near Wolverhampton

A VAN driver died in a crash that forced the closure of the M6.

Two lorries and a van were involved in the collision on the southbound carriageway between Cannock and Wolverhampton, near Hilton Park Services, shortly after 12.30pm yesterday.

The Highways Agency closed the road for more than three hours while emergency services tended to the casualties and accident investigators carried out a reconstruction.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival, crews found two lorries and a van that had been in a significant collision.

“One lorry had rear end damage, the second lorry had minor front end and significant rear end damage and the van had significant front end damage.

“Sadly, it quickly became apparent that there was nothing that could be done to save the driver of the van and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”

A lorry driver in his 40s was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital, and the motorway was reopened at 4pm.

Any witnesses are urged to call 0121 626 1285.
