PM denies early voting reform poll

Gordon Brown has insisted he has "no plans" to hold a referendum on electoral reform before the next General Election.

At Commons question time, Conservative leader David Cameron said a voting system of proportional representation had "massive drawbacks", as demonstrated by the election of two BNP candidates to the European Parliament.

He said the PM is only proposing electoral reform because the Labour Party had been "trashed" in last week's elections and accused him of "treating the nation like fools".

But, in clashes just before Mr Brown unveils his plans for electoral reform to MPs, the PM said he had never supported PR for the Westminster Parliament.

Of the BNP's successes, Mr Brown said that the politics of "discrimination, prejudice and bigotry" had no place in British democratic life.
