Pledge over loos clean-up

PUBLIC toilets in Harborne, which have caused a stink for years, are finally getting a proper clean-up and are to be better maintained.

That's the promise from council officers who have been bombarded for years with complaints about the state of the loos off the High Street's busy shopping area.

The block of toilets up an alley next to Attwood House will be locked at night and open during shopping hours between 9am and 5pm. The Victorian urinal next to O'Neills pub further up the High Street will have a major clean-up.

The council has pledged that they will be cleaned daily and pressure-washed once a week.

Former Lord Mayors Coun Peter Hollingworth and John Alden earned themselves the nickname of "the loo lads" after they donned rubber gloves and scrubbed the toilets clean themselves.

"Dirty toilets in Harborne have always been a big issue," said Coun Alden. "Let's hope this is going to be the start of a new clean era."
