Transport bosses: We'll end gridlock

CITY transport chiefs today vowed to end gridlock on Birmingham roads after earmarking almost 300 traffic congestion hotspots.

Coun Len Gregory, cabinet member for transport, announced a new congestion task force, a move he promised would "get Birmingham moving".

The task force will rate the busiest roads as those offering "quick wins", those needing medium term solutions, and longer-term issues.

Quick wins include hotspots where simple action such as altering traffic light timings or changing road markings can help drivers along.

Coun Gregory said: "Already, we have completed eight improvements from the task force suggestions with the same number currently ongoing.

"We have also identified another two dozen sites to be dealt with before the end of March. It is important to keep this momentum going from the good start we have made."

He urged residents and motorists to contact the congestion task force with further suggestions for imprfovements to traffic bottlenecks in the city.
