Pub name saved after campaign

A LANDMARK city pub will keep its name following a campaign by regulars and locals.

Brewery bosses who considered changing the name of the Beggars Bush pub in Chester Road, New Oscott have backed down.

Residents complained that the pub is named after a old hawthorn bush on the boundary between Sutton Coldfield and Kingstanding.

The junction of Chester Road and Jockey Road has been known as the Beggar's Bush since the early 19th Century. The pub was built in 1927.

The pub's owners the Spirit Group had suggested renaming the historic pub as part of a £400,000 refurbishment, but have now recognised the significance of the name.

Pub manager Kevin Allen said: "We would love to hear from anyone who knows about the history of the Beggars Bush. Pubs have always been traditionally at the heart of the community and we're sure that between this pub's four walls there have been a few interesting events and tales to tell.

"There is a complimentary meal for anyone who can tell us a fascinating story."

Anyone wanting to take the company up on its offer is invited to write to: Sam Purnell, Bray Leino PR, The Blue House, Clifton Down, Bristol BS8 3HT.

The Beggars Bush re-opens on December 12.
