Gazza fails to turn up at charity event

TROUBLED soccer legend Paul Gascoigne failed to show up at a Midland childrens' charity event where he had been due to appear.

The former manager of non-league club Kettering was expected to address hundreds of people at the Promise Dreams event at Walsall's Bescot Stadium last night.

The Wolverhampton-based charity raises money for children who are seriously or terminally ill.

In a statement read to those attending, Gascoigne said: "I am so sorry not to be able to join you for this wonderful occasion.

"I have supported Promise Dreams for many years and the charity provides fantastic opportunities for seriously ill children.

"I urge you to dig deep into your pockets to raise funds for this worthwhile cause and I hope you all have a great evening."

Gascoigne, aged 38, has been plagued with controversy since he was sacked from Kettering amid claims he was drunk on the job. The former England star has denied it.

He was arrested on Monday following an alleged drunken assault on a photographer at a charity fund-raiser in Liverpool.

Event organiser Kirsty Bull claimed Gazza pulled out hours before last night's event.

She said 400 signed photographs and a signed England shirt had been sent to her by the star. People were believed to have paid £55 a ticket for the event.
