University teachers walk out

COLLEGES and universities in the West Midlands were due to be hit by strike action today when academics walked out in a dispute over pay.

The joint action by Natfhe and the Association of University Teachers was due to affect Aston and Birmingham universities as well as Newman College, in Bartley Green.

Striking academics were gathering at Birmingham University, in Edgbaston, for a rally at 1pm.

Sue Davis, regional official of Natfhe, said the joint unions were seeking to play "catch up" with comparable professions.

"We want academics to maintain some sort of pay parity. The issue around student tuition fees is that an element was supposed to go towards improving academics' pay, but there is nothing on the table from the employers ."

The joint unions submitted a claim last October for a 23 per cent pay rise over three years, but there has been no response from the University Colleges Employers Association.
