Woman injured in house fire

A WOMAN who tried to put out a fire in her Birmingham kitchen ended up in hospital with burns to her arms and back.

After her own attempts failed at the house in Pavenham Drive, Edgbaston, she called the fire brigade.

Divisional Officer Phil James, of West Midlands fire service said: "In the panic to get out of the house the woman could not find her keys, so we had to break in to rescue her.

"The message here is when a fire breaks out in the home, get the fire brigade out and stay out yourself. It is also wise to make sure you have a fire escape plan well rehearsed before it becomes an emergency.

"We also understand that there was no working smoke alarm in the house."

Fire crews from Bournbrook and Highgate attended the blaze yesterday.

Bournbrook leading firefighter Matthew Ling said: "We understand that the fire started when an item of clothing caught fire and the woman tried to put it out herself."

The woman, believed to be in her 40s, was taken to Selly Oak Hospital. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
