Alert after post office raid

POST offices in east Birmingham were on red alert today after an armed raid in Tile Cross.

A hooded teenager walked into the Dillons News, in Tile Cross Road, armed with a handgun and threatened staff before fleeing empty handed.

No shots were fired in the attempted robbery on Monday, June 12, and no-one was injured at the store, which has a post office counter on the premises.

The gunman, described as white and in his late teens, was being sought today by West Midlands Police. Offciers said they did not believe he was working with an accomplice, and did not have a get-away vehicle.

Post offices in The Glebe, Stechford, Shard End, and in Marston Green have now been alerted by Royal Mail about the potential threat should the gunman strike again.

Drivers making deliveries on behalf of Royal Mail to stores in the east Birmingham area have also been warned to be on their guard and report anyone acting suspiciously.
