Council appeal over historic cricket pavilion

WORCESTER City Council has again urged developers not to demolish a historic cricket pavilion which once hosted the Australian national team.

The city's Conservation Officer, Will Scott, said the 130-year old structure at the Cinderella Sports Ground represents an important piece of local history.

The Cinderella site is currently subject to a planning appeal for housing development and the local authority has failed in a bid to secure listed status for the building.

Mr Scott added: "Even if we cannot stop the bulldozers from moving in, I would call upon the developers to have a change of heart because once this part of the city's heritage is lost, it will be lost forever."

It is known that the Australian national side used the pavilion during its first ever tour of England in 1878, while the legendary WG Grace made several appearances at the ground.
