Forensic link leads to rape charge

A MAN has been charged with raping a woman almost 16 years ago after the case was re-opened following a forensic breakthrough.

Police said the 47-year-old Birmingham man, who has not yet been named, was due to appear before magistrates in Birmingham charged with rape. The charge relates to an attack in the city centre in August 1990.

The case is the latest to be re-looked at by West Midlands Police's Major Crime Review Team as part of Operation Advance.

Set up two years ago, the Home Office-backed operation uses the latest DNA techniques to investigate historical sexual assaults.
