Smoker rescued by police

A SMOKER owed his life to a fire alarm today after passing police officers who heard the noise burst into his home and led him to safety.

Firefighters sent to the 47-year-old's bedsit at Woodnorton Drive, Moseley, said he would have been "burned alive" had the detector not gone off when he fell asleep while smoking in bed at 4.10am.

He was led to safety by police who kicked his front door in and was unhurt.

Fire officers from Billesley and Highgate wore breathing equipment to remove the man's bedlinen.

The property was not damaged.

Sub officer Max Jovic, of Billesley fire station, said the man's lucky escape highlighted the value of smoke alarms.

"The alarm saved his life. Luckily for him, police were in the area attending something else and heard it going off.

"He would have been burned alive in bed without the alarm."
