Traders' delight at radio scheme

POLICE and community groups in Bushbury and Low Hill, Wolverhampton, have hailed a new radio scheme a huge success.

Traders hit by shoplifting were given hand-held radios to reduce crime and warn other shopkeepers.

The project has been so successful that it has now been extended to include neighbourhood watch schemes, and police officers being issued with handsets.

Volunteers and police officers at the Low Hill police base constantly monitor the airwaves and are able to respond when called to assist.

Crime alerts and descriptions of suspects can be circulated over a large area.

Within seconds, retailers and Showell Circus and Bushbury Lane residents can be on the look-out for an offender, guiding police to their location with up to the minute reports.

Twenty-six hand-held radios have been issued so far at a cost of £5,000 which has been met by Neighbourhood Renewal Funding and Neighbourhood Watch schemes.
