Lucky escape for family after fire

A MUM and toddler had a lucky escape after a blaze broke out at their home in Winson Green.

Eagle-eyed neighbours spotted smoke pouring out of the bedroom window at the house in Perrott Street at around 9.40pm yesterday and raised the alarm.

"Luckily this meant they were able to get themselves out of the house and call for help," said Handsworth fire officer Andrew Secker.

"Unfortunately they didn't have a smoke alarm, so unless the neighbours had spotted the fire they may not have realised in time to get out. The fire gutted the bedroom and caused extensive smoke damage to the first floor."

The blaze is thought to have been started by an electrical fault.
