Boost for New Street gateway

THE redevelopment of New Street received a huge boost today when the Department of Transport concluded plans for a £500 million "Birmingham Gateway" were viable.

The Department published a detailed report which concluded Network Rail and its partners had drawn up a workable scheme for the station.

It means the hard work of raising funding for the redevelopment can now begin.

The Birmingham and West Midlands Rail Capacity Review was drawn up by a rail industry team including Network Rail, Central Trains, Virgin Trains and Centro, the West Midland passenger Transport Executive.

Crucially, Department for Transport officials were also part of the team, and approved the findings.

Gisela Stuart (Lab Edgbaston), who is spearheading a cross-party campaign of all Birmingham MPs, said: "With this study backing us up, Birmingham can get stuck in to raising the finance the scheme will need."
