Man injured after horrific car crash

A MAN suffered horrific injuries to his legs and back when his car collided with another vehicle and smashed into a tree in Birmingham.

Firemen fought for more than an hour to cut the man free from his wrecked Toyota Avensis following the smash in Hall Green Parade, Hall Green, just after 7pm yesterday.

A couple in the other car involved escaped injury, but were badly shaken by the incident.

The driver of the Toyota, a man in his 20s, was helped by paramedics and a flying doctor who arrived at the scene just minutes after the smash.

It is believed the Avensis struck another car and then spun several times across the road before careering into a tree.

The driver suffered extensive injuries, including a badly broken leg and pelvic injuries.

Fire Station Officer Andy Burnham said crews had arrived to find the man trapped and in a great deal of pain.

He said: "It took us about an hour to free him using our specialist cutting gear. All the time paramedics were tending to him because his injuries were so extensive."

Mr Burnham added:"His femur had been pushed back on impact into his pelvis and he was in a very bad way. He is lucky to be alive."

Police were waiting to interview the man.
