Bullimore in record bid

Tony Bullimore

VETERAN yachtsman Tony Bullimore announced today he would try to beat the world record for sailing non-stop and single-handed around the world.

Bullimore, 67, originally from Birmingham but now living in Bristol, will be the first sailor to attempt to better the 71-day record set by Dame Ellen MacArthur in February last year in her 75ft trimaran B&Q.

He has received sponsorship from the Qatar government which is hosting the Asian Games in Doha later this year.

The yachtsman was famously rescued from the Southern Ocean in 1996 during the Vendee Globe solo non-stop race when his keel broke off and his boat capsized.

He was eventually picked up by the Royal Australian Navy after spending several days in his capsized hull.

He has Tracy Edwards's former catamaran, the 100ft Royal Sun Alliance, for the challenge.
