Cocaine seized at airport

EAGLE-eyed Customs officers seized six kilos of cocaine as it was being smuggled into Birmingham airport.

The party drug, with an estimated street value of £200,000, was found hidden in the sides of a trolley bag.

Andreas Friederichs, a 47-year-old German national living in Uganda, was arrested after arriving in Birmingham on a flight from Uganda via Nairobi and Brussels.

He was charged with the attempted importation of Class A drugs and is due to appear before Solihull magistrates on Thursday.

Bob Lyne, Senior Business Manager for Revenue & Customs, said: "We have succeeded through hard work, improved intelligence gathering and the ability of our team of expert officers to disrupt this latest attempt to bring Class A drugs into the area.

"We will do everything in our power to disrupt organised drugs ring and hope this send a clear message that our approach is one of zero tolerance."
