Locals bitter at pub proposals

OUTRAGED residents are protesting against plans to convert a derelict landmark bank building into a trendy pub.

Developers want to convert the former Barclays Bank branch in Pershore Road, Cotteridge into a pub or restaurant.

But elderly residents of the Beaumont Park sheltered apartment complex next door are up in arms over fears of illegal car parking and late night noise and nuisance.

Coun Nigel Dawkins (Cons, Bournville), who is backing them, said: "We are objecting because we don't want a pub in Cotteridge. The noise and disturbance to the church on one side and elderly persons on the other makes it unacceptable."

He said Cotteridge is a retail shopping centre and the building should be preserved as a shop or bank.

There are not enough car parking spaces and residents already have problems with motorists blocking Beaumont Park which would now continue into the evening, he added.

The applicant, BJC Midlands Painter-Salter of Bridge Street, said no particular pub or restaurant company was lined up but, if approved, they would market the building for lease with permission.

Despite the objections the city's planning department is recommending the application be approved, but officials suggest limiting opening hours.
