Bomb alert package a false alarm

THE suspicious package that sparked a mid-air terror alert on Birmingham-bound jet contained only hand tools, it emerged today.

The trans-atlantic Air India flight from Toronto, Canada, was forced to turn back after the package was found in a toilet on Monday night.

The 149 passengers and 11 crew were evacuated from the aircraft and detained for 12 hours as police investigated the find.

A control explosion was carried out but police have now said the package contained hand tools bound together by tape in a "unique way".

Con Jennifer Byer, of Peel Regional Police, said nobody had claimed it.

Passenger Kiran Khaira, aged 24, of City Road, Birmingham, said: "Everyone was quite nervous, wondering what was going on. I'm glad they made the decision to turn back."
