Man hurt in smash

A MAN is recovering in hospital after the car in which he was travelling in went off the road and smashed into a petrol sign early today.

The car was travelling along Whitehouse Common Road, Sutton Coldfield at 6am when it ploughed through a brick wall and hit a Tesco Express petrol sign.

The driver of the car fled from the scene, leaving a male passenger in the car with suspected serious injuries.

Firefighters from Sutton Coldfield and ambulance paramedics attended the scene and helped the injured man before he was taken to hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

Police were hunting for the car driver.

* A man was later arrested by police and was helping with their inquiries.
