Arrests over stately home raids

A HUGE police operation involving forces from five counties made 14 arrests as part of an investigation into burglaries at stately homes including two in Worcestershire.

Police believe their dawn raids have now smashed the gang of criminals behind a string of raids on up to nine stately homes over a 21 month period last year.

They say the gang stole fine art and antiques to the value of £30 million in the raids on stately homes and country mansions including Ombersley Court, in Ombersley, on October 12 last year and Spetchley Park, Worcester, on November 8.

West Mercia Police were among those making arrests which took place in Oxfordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershireas part of a joint operation between them and Thames Valley and Wiltshire police forces.

Assistant Chief Constable Francis Habgood, from Thames Valley Police, said: "Detectives have investigated over £30 million worth of crime and recovered approximately a third of this."
