Phones back on after BT raid

THE telephone service to thousands of Birmingham customers, cut off when thieves sliced through cables, has been fully restored by BT.

Emergency calls had to be made on mobile phones as up to 35,000 homes and businesses were affected by damage caused during a burglary in Birmingham.

Raiders had cut through BT cables at an exchange near Handsworth sorting office on Soho Hill in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Areas affected by the damage included Aston, central Birmingham, Perry Barr, Handsworth, Ladywood, Blackheath, Stonecroft, West Bromwich, Tipton and Wednesbury.

The break-in to the exchange, which is secure and usually unmanned, happened between 1.10am and 2am on Sunday, with a burglar entering the building via a hatch on the ground. Nothing was taken.

Police said the offender, who had gone to some trouble and effort to sabotage the cables, may have been a disgruntled BT employee. ..SUPL:
