Mail columnist bailed

THE case of a newspaper columnist accused of wasting police time has been further adjourned by Birmingham magistrates.

Maureen Messent, who writes for the Birmingham Mail and did not appear at the hearing, is accused of making a false report by means of a newspaper article and radio interview under the Criminal Law Act 1967.

The charge relates to an article written by the columnist in which she claimed to have been involved in the mercy killing of her aunt.

Messent, 68, from Balsall Heath, was bailed to appear before magistrates on November 22.
