A MAN being hunted by detectives investigating the stabbing of West Bromwich Albion star Ronnie Wallwork has given himself up to police.

oWallwork, aged 29, who is currently on loan with Barnsley, was in a bar in Manchester last Thursday when he was attacked by a man and stabbed seven times in the hand, back and stomach.

The midfielder is still recovering in hospital, where his condition is said to be stable.

Greater Manchester Police said today that a 20-year-old man, believed to be Robert Rimmer, handed himself into police last night.

He was today being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder.

Rimmer is an ex-boyfriend of Wallwork's current girlfriend.

Wallwork has been inundated by 'get well soon' messages from his Albion team-mates.

Paul Robinson revealed that he and other Albion players had bombarded Wallwork with text messages and phone calls.

"I've left a message on Ronnie's phone as have a few lads," said Robinson, who will line up for Albion in this Sunday's televised game against Barnsley, where Wallwork was on loan at the time of his attack.

"Obviously the lads are devastated with what's happened. Ronnie is a great person to have around the place and we hope he makes a speedy recovery and we send our best wishes to him and his family."

Robinson revealed that The Hawthorns was still in a state of shock following the attack on Wallwork.

"We couldn't believe it when we heard and it's still difficult to take in," added Robinson.

"You don't expect things like this to happen to people you know.

"We were in shock because we know the type of person Ronnie is.

"He's a gentleman and a great footballer and we want to see back as soon as possible.

"He's in Manchester at the moment so it's been difficult to see him but we've all left messages or spoken to him on the phone and we're all rooting for him.

"We just want to see him up and about and hopefully playing football again."

Albion's physio, Nick Worth, went to see Wallwork earlier this week.
