500 new homes for city estate

ONE of the city's worst sink estates is at the centre of the council's biggest home building schemes for 30 new years.

Around 500 new dwellings - some for council tenants, others for sale, some for old people and the rest for shared ownership - are to be built as a result of a £30 million city land sale on Northfield's Egghill estate.

The £1m-an-acre transaction will also see some land reserved for light industry, revealed Cabinet housing chief Coun John Lines.

He promised that profits from the deal would be reinvested to bring other council homes in the Northfield area up to decent standards with double glazing, insulation, and central heating.

"It is the biggest scheme for housing we have had for 30 years, and it will see new council houses built again," he said.

"Hopefully this major regeneration scheme will also create much needed jobs in Northfield."
