Giving schools a real bounce

DRIBBLING skills have helped big-hearted pupils at a Smith's Wood college slam dunk their way to clinching a gong.

Ten teenagers from Smith's Wood Sports College, in Windward Way, are celebrating after winning a Diana Princess of Wales Memorial

Award for their outstanding contribution to the college and their community.

The youngsters, all aged 13 to 15, are junior coaches to the college's basketball team, providing tips to younger pupils and regularly attending the Saturday training club. And when they are not too busy shooting hoops, the youngsters also make regular visits to two special schools in a bid to break down the barriers between mainstream and special needs pupils.

Sally Bowen, a spokes-woman for the school, said: "We are proud and delighted for all the students. They have been chosen for this award because of their inspirational qualities.

"They give up two hours each week to help coach basket ball to younger pupils from local primary schools, special schools and other secondary schools.

"Although there are many pressures on them socially and academically, their commitment is outstanding and the club thrives because of their regular attendance and support in training other members. They are committed, caring, good leaders and are a credit to our college"
