Another 24 post offices set to be axed

ANOTHER 24 post offices in Birmingham are facing closure under latest Government attempts to staunch the network's multi million pound losses.

The new cull comes on top of the closure of 49 Birmingham post offices over the past five years.

Coun Deirdre Alden said the latest Government drive to shut another 2,500 from this summer would hit another 24 branches in Birmingham.

She said: "If a post office closes, other shops in a parade come under threat and any closures will hit the elderly and poorest people most."

She added that the answer to the problem was to give post office branches greater freedom to offer a wider range of goods.
