Car clue in hunt for football club robbers

Tamworth Football Club

POLICE investigating a terrifying robbery at Tamworth FC were today hunting the owner of a car spotted speeding into the grounds.

Three masked robbers, armed with a machete and two sawn-off shotguns, rifled the pockets of six staff and plundered the tills and safe just hours after the Lambs' FA Cup clash against Norwich City on Saturday.

They escaped with a "substantial" haul running into thousands of pounds in bar takings.

Early inquiries by detectives have revealed that a Seat Leon with alloy wheels was spotted speeding on to the club car park at around 12 o'clock on Saturday night.

Staffordshire Police believe the owner could be a vital witness as he or she would have been one of the last people to leave the car park around the time of the raid.

The tip-off is thought to have come from a reveller leaving an 18th birthday party which had just finished at the Lambs' social club before the raiders struck.

The main offender was wearing a dark green parka-style jacket with a hood pulled over his head.

The other two offenders were wearing casual dark-coloured clothing. Anyone with information can call police on 0845 330 2010 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
