Man saved from blaze at house

A MAN with learning difficulties was rescued from his smoke-filled Birmingham home today after trying to tackle a fire himself.

The 34-year-old man was led to safety by firefighters from Aston and Handsworth as he filled a kettle from a sink in the converted ground floor bedroom in Somerset Road, Handsworth, at 2am.

Fire officers led him to safety through the rear of the end-terrace property, but he declined to go to hospital for further treatment.

The occupant of the room, which is in one of four neighbouring houses occupied by people with learning difficulties, had already escaped. But he was taken to hospital by ambulance after later complaining of chest pains.

A spokesman for Handsworth fire station said the cause of the blaze was a discarded cigarette end on the bed.
