Police bus patrols in bid to stop thefts

POLICE will mount high visibility patrols on buses in Birmingham to help protect school children from falling foul of robbers.

January often sees a seasonal increase in offences as youngsters make their way to and from school.

Bobbies will join children on major bus routes throughout the city during the morning rush-hour and also at home time to provide a reassuring presence.

Officers will be using a drugs dogs as part of the operation, codenamed Trojan, and will be handing out crime reduction advice to children offering hints and tips how to keep their belongings safe.

Statistics show that electronic equipment, such as mp3 players and mobile phones, are top of the list of items stolen from youngsters, often by other children, at this time of year.

Sgt David Postin, from the force's Safer Travel team, said: "We hope potential robbers will be deterred from committing offences due to the presence of both uniformed and plain clothed officers."
