Thousands hit by power cut

MORE than a thousand families in Birmingham were left without power after a short circuit in a cable box.

Residents on the Castle Vale estate reported hearing a loud bang and saw smoke coming out of the electricity cable box at around 6.45pm yesterday.

A Central Networks spokesman said today that 1,100 customers were affected by the black-out caused by the fault, including families in Heyford Way, Hawkinge Drive, Kingsbury Road and Turnhouse Road.

"Within an hour all but 33 of our customers had their power supply back," added the spokesman. "And by 10.25pm everyone's supply was back up and running and the problem had been resolved."

He said the incident was likely to have been caused by a fuse blowing in cables that run through the box, which was in Heyford Way.
