NEC chosen for 'large' casino

THE NEC was today chosen by the Government as a site for a large casino, bringing hundreds of new jobs to the West Midland complex.

The money-spinning venture is on its way to the NEC after the Casino Advisory Panel ruled it was one of eight sites nationwide for an 150 gaming machine complex with £4,000 jackpots.

The Panel awarded Solihull Council the right to oversee the casino, clearing the path for a major financial shot in the arm for the NEC.

The NEC victory comes less than a year after the complex was turned down as the site for a super-casino, which today was awarded to Manchester.

Birmingham Council regeneration chief Ken Hardeman today described the award of a large casino to the NEC as a "consolation prize".

"The economic benefits will certainly help the NEC but what bothers me is in regeneration terms it won't help Birmingham at all. But I am sure both Solihull and the NEC will be cheering this announcement."
