Boy falls through thin ice in city park

A BIRMINGHAM boy was lucky to escape unharmed after plunging through ice into a freezing lake.

The 11-year-old from Northfield was playing in Manor Park, off Bristol Road, in Selly Oak, at around 3.45pm yesterday when the ice cracked as he tried to retrieve his bag.

He slipped into the water, but hauled himself out after a few seconds.

Paramedics were called to seven tobogganing injuries on a golf course at Beacon Hill, off Monument Lane, Rednal, between 1.25pm and 4pm. One boy was taken to hospital.
