College principal defects to city rival

Principal Christine Braddock at Matthew Boulton College's new home

THE principal of Birmingham's Matthew Boulton College has resigned from her post to become head of a rival college in the city.

Christine Braddock will take over from Graham Jones at Sutton Coldfield College from September 1.

The move will come as a surprise to many following the reallocation of Matthew Boulton from run-down premises in Pershore Road to a showcase £40 million complex near Aston University in the city centre just a year-and-a-half ago.

Ms Braddock has had a bumpy ride since the college move, with her management style called into question by staff and students.

Complaints by some members of staff of an aggressive management style led to the University and College Union conducting a bullying survey.

However, Ms Braddock disputed the findings, maintaining they were based on the responses of only 36 disgruntled members of staff.

She appeared to be vindicated when a recent Ofsted inspection praised her "strong leadership".
